Sharon, I had a recurrence of serous carcinoma less than 1.5 year after a hysterectomy which supposedly removed all the cancer. I was stage 1A, but in the recurrence I had distant metastasis. I wish my oncologist had suggested chemo following the hysterectomy, but I guess he thought it was unnecessary. For the recurrence I went through chemo and am in remission now and doing well.

Serous endometrial cancer is considered a Type 2 cancer that tends to grow faster and is more aggressive than other types. Around 50% of serous endometrial cancer cases recur, and it's more challenging to treat in later stages. The five-year survival rate for stage 3 or 4 serous endometrial cancer is approximately 33%. Several factors influence the risk of recurrence:

• Disease stage (ranging from 4.8% in Stage 1 to 66.7% in Stage 4)
• Tumor grade (higher grade tumors are more likely to recur)
• Tumor size (larger than 2cm increases risk)
• Myometrial invasion (deeper invasion into uterine wall increases risk)

Most recurrences happen within three years of initial treatment. If cancer returns, your oncologist will create a new treatment plan based on:
• Location of recurrence
• Previous treatments received
• Overall health condition
